Dr. Khaled Al-Maz: The Syrian Artist Who Calls America Home

Immigrating at a later age, as illustrated by Dr. Khaled Al-Maz’s story, comes with unique challenges, most notably the language barrier, but still a rewarding experience.

Dr. Khaled Al-Maz is a Syrian artist and former university dean, born in 1934 in Latakia. Passionate about painting and sculpture from a young age, he studied fine arts in Egypt and France. Upon returning to Syria, he built a career in education and the arts, eventually becoming dean of the College of Fine Arts at the Damascus University. He’s widely respected for his paintings—portraits, nudes, cubism, impressionism, and abstract art—particularly his use of blues and depictions of the human figure.

In 2019, he moved to Omaha, Nebraska, to live with his daughter Rana. Though he speaks mainly Arabic at home and hasn’t mastered English, he enjoys painting daily, watching movies, and the friendliness of Americans. Despite his past fame in Syria, he’s content with a quieter life in the U.S. and remains dedicated to his art. His children have also taken up painting, influenced by his lifelong passion. When asked where he feels most at home, he values all the places he’s lived but holds a special fondness for Latakia and the artistic inspiration he found in Egypt and France.
