The Eye in The Albanian Sky | The Castles of Albania

Conversation with Dr. Elvana Metalla, an Albanian archeologist.

38 man-made castles enhance the natural beauty of Albania, a country known for its coastline, mountains, and troubled history.

Geographically positioned in the southeastern edge of Europe, where the continent meets Asia, Albania has always been a war target during its 8,000 years of existence.

How did they defend themselves? They built castles.

There is a castle per every ~292 square miles (~756 square kilometers) in Albania. The country covers an area of 11,100 square miles (28,748 square kilometers) on the western part of the Balkan Peninsula.

The eye in the Albanian sky offers a virtual tour of the country’s most visited castles, explained by Dr. Elvana Metalla.

Dr. Metalla is an Albanian archeologist and childhood friend of the host, Enkela Vehbiu.
