Al Hawawshi Loaf: An Egyptian Street Food Recipe, Now a Staple of Middle Eastern Cuisine

A must try recipe that delivers great flavors in a short time.

I am taking you to Egypt today as we will make Al Hawawshi loaf.

Al Hawawshi loaf is stuffed pita bread that can be prepared in minutes and yet deliver plenty of flavor. I am not spoiling the story behind it, as I know you will watch my video above, but I am telling you that you have no excuses not to make dinner tonight since this is a very quick recipe.

Don’t take my word. Try it for yourself. Here is the recipe.

  • 4 -5 pita bread
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 diced onion
  • 1 diced chili pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon of coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • Salt to taste

In a big bowl, mix the meat and all the other ingredients, besides butter. Preheat oven at 400F. Cut the pita bread into half and open them. Stuff each half with two tablespoons of the meat mixture. Melt the butter in a preheated pan and coat the stuffed pita on both sides, until golden brown. Then layer a baking tray with parchment paper, place the pittas on top, cover with another sheet of parchment paper and lastly seal all with aluminum foil. Place the tray in the oven for about wrap each loaf with parchment paper, place it in a tray and put in the oven for about 10-15 minutes, until the meat is cooked. Serve it with yogurt and pickles.
